NVIDIA introduced the 64-bit mobile processor Tegra X1 256 graphics cores
NVIDIA Corporation in the run-up to the CES 2015 unveiled its new single-chip platform Tegra X1. CEO Jen-Hsun Huang calls her mobile superchipom, the main feature of which – a powerful graphics with arhtekturoy Maxwell.
Tegra X1 combines a graphics accelerator with 256 stream processors and 8-core CPU in the configuration of 4 + 4. 64-bit chip uses big.LITTLE combined four energy-efficient core ARM Cortex-A53 and four powerful Cortex-A57. According to NVIDIA, Tegra X1 doubles performance compared with K1 at the same level of energy consumption.
Tegra X1 is made in compliance with the 20-nm process, is able to play video in 4K resolution at 60 frames / s in modern formats H.265 (HEVC) or similar Google VP9. Among the supported graphics accelerator technologies present DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.5, CUDA, OpenGL ES 3.1 and Android Extension Pack.
NVIDIA shared indicators of relative performance Tegra X1 compared to its predecessor K1 and one of the most powerful mobile chip Apple A8X, used in tablet iPad Air 2:
NVIDIA claims that Tegra X1 is the first mobile chip, which can provide theoretical performance in the calculation of floating point operations at the level of 1 teraflops. Unlike previous chip Tegra, X1 supports 16-bit data types floating point FP16. This format requires considerably less computing power compared to FP32 in Tegra K1. First supercomputers overcome the bar theoretical performance of 1 teraflops in 2000, with that required for the system to power 1 million watts.
Huang did not disclose the frequency response, but called the maximum power consumption – impressive for a mobile processor 10 watts. This mode worked processor Tegra X1 during the execution of the demonstration Unreal Engine 4 Elemental, which uses HDR-lighting and floating point calculations. 10W itself based system X1 was not shown.
According to NVIDIA, Tegra X1 is now available for manufacturers of devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.), But any real damage models will be before the end of 2015.
