Like most of the illicit drugs , cocaine is highly addictive. Recent studies show that drug addiction can be controlled by acting on the brain.

In experiments with rats, the scientists of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center, University of California at San Francisco, found that “on and off” cocaine addiction is possible through the impact of the cerebral cortex by laser radiation.

Scientists have begun to experiment with the introduction of sensitive proteins known as rhodopsin neurons in the prefrontal cortex of rats. Stimulation of the electrical activity of neurons was performed using laser light which is fed into rodent brains implanted through a fiber optic cable. By controlling the impulse activity of neurons, researchers were able to significantly reduce cocaine addiction in rats.

Conversely, inhibition of neuronal activity forced to find a new experimental dose. Thus, drug addicts as well as rat suffer low activity prefrontal cortex.

But that does not mean that the drug will be irradiated by the laser. The same effect can be achieved by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), acting on the cerebral cortex with short magnetic pulses through the skull.

In the short term, the researchers plan to begin testing on humans. The full study was published in the recent edition of the scientific journal Nature.
