Older iPhones Will Not Receive FaceTime Group Video Calls

In the near future, users will be available to upgrade to iOS 12.1 in which Apple will return support for group calls on FaceTime. However, do not be in a hurry to rejoice – as it became known, owners of old iPhones and iPads will not be able to participate in FaceTime videoconferences. Most likely, Apple decided to abandon the implementation of the option due to insufficient performance of old devices.

The FaceTime group call feature was introduced as early as WWDC 2018. Initially, the option was available in the first beta builds of iOS 12, but it was soon removed by developers for further refinement. The long-awaited innovation did not appear even in the final version 12 of the mobile operating system Apple. What exactly was the delay was not reported.

Recently, the company updated the official iOS manual to the latest version. In the section dedicated to FaceTime, there was information that the function of group video calls will not work on older devices. Apparently, the company’s engineers could not adapt the option, and at the same time achieve acceptable performance on the outdated iPhone and iPad.

The full list of unsupported devices is as follows:

Smartphones iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
IPad Mini 2, iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air Tablet PCs
It should be taken into account that in this case we are talking about video conferencing, respectively, users of old devices will be able to participate in normal group calls without any restrictions.

Recall iOS 12.1 is currently in beta testing. The release of the update is scheduled for late October. In this minor update, about 70 new emoji were added, an error preventing the charging of devices, most often found on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max , was fixed. Among other things, the update includes the latest developments in the field of security and performance.
