Online game shop Discord pays the developer 90% of the turnover

discord, a chat platform for games that also sells games, will keep 10 percent of the revenue from games from 2019 and the developer gets 90 percent of the revenue from his game, the company announced.

Discord says it takes that decision, because developers say to the company that online stores would not be entitled to 30 percent of the revenue. “As a result, we see developers building their own stores and launchers, while we should focus much more on what is really important: developing great games.”

According to Discord online stores do not need 30 percent of sales, if they only focus on making the store and the technology around it. Developers can add their games to the store themselves via a ‘self-serve’ system. The 10 percent for Discord is for covering operational costs.

The reduction of the percentage fits into a new trend of competition between online game shops. Discord’s main competitors are Steam, which is 30 percent, and Epic Games , which will soon also have its own online gaming store and where developers have to donate 12 percent. Tweakers discussed the competition between online game shops, including in the most recent episode of the Tweakers Podcast.
