A group of researchers from the Institute of Creative Science (ICT) at the University of Southern California is currently developing a program of virtual therapist who can identify signs of depression in people, irritability, and post-traumatic stress disorder. SimSensei project aims to create a machine that has the ability to learn, as well as visual and verbal analysis of military personnel and their families to identify symptoms that would indicate a need to help people.

In general, the technology is based on two systems: the actual virtual therapist «SimSensei», with which people and will have to communicate, as well as the system Multisense, which will determine incurred by the human disorder. Multisense system will listen to what he is talking and says people and collect at this point necessary to analyze the data from the facial expressions and behavior in time of the conversation and ending voice and linguistic peculiarities. In addition to this, the system will monitor the person analyzing his irritability and attention during the “reception”. The data obtained in real time will be processed, and then the virtual therapist SimSensei will suggest possible solutions in different situations.

The scientists say that their system is not created for the purpose of accurate diagnosis. Instead, it only aims to collect information about the psychological state of a person and to identify the first signs of a possible disorder. All this will help to have a real live doctors promptly and correctly choose the appropriate treatment. In addition, the technology will allow each person to create a database, and then follow the change in his condition and prevent further development of various psychological disorders.

At the moment the system SimSensei and Multisense are in the prototype stage, but ICT has decided to show some of their features.
