Patrick Stewart returns to Star Trek in his role as Captain Picard

“Jean-Luc Picard is back.” The 78-year-old actor Patrick Stewart once again plays the role of the iconic spaceship captain in a new Star Trek series. It is the first time since 1994 that the actor again appears on TV as Picard. The last film with Picard is from 2002.

The moment of the unveiling, at a Star Trek fair in Las Vegas, is recorded by one of the visitors in a livestream, shown below. Beware, they cheer very loudly. Apparently her phone is just as good a Trekkie who almost has a heart attack, because after the announcement her livestream nearly collapses, with a whirlwind of compression artefacts as a result. “Whatever happens in the next few years, what makes you all worthwhile,” says the actor after the cheering has diminished somewhat.

Stewart will play Picard in a completely new series for the television network CBS, but the series has no name yet. “He may not be a captain anymore. He may not even be the same person you know. He may have changed through his experiences. In the series it is also twenty years later for Picard. ‘ At the same time there is another Star Trek series, called Star Trek: Discovery. Season two of them will appear on the tube in 2019, but that is not the series in which we will see Picard. There are no scripts for this new series yet, but Stewart and the producers are talking to each other.

A commenter on Reddit describes Picard as ‘the noblest character among all nobles’. His speeches inspired many people. One does not have to look far on YouTube for examples of this.

Warning: very loud cheers
