A group of researchers from Princeton University began conducting some very interesting experiments with light. But instead of looking for his incredible speed, the scientists decided to stop it freezing the light in the crystal. And now it is not a question that scientists have put the light in the crystal, the scientists have created more of a crystal of light.
This process, they cranked up as follows: sent particles of light (photons) at one point and instantly froze them. Previously, this had never been done, and therefore undertaking research can be a starting point for creating new exotic materials with surprising and perhaps even strange properties.
For his experiment, the scientists first created a special structure of superconductivity materials containing 100 billion atoms, which they made to behave as artificial. The researchers then placed the “artificial” atoms close to superconductivity wires containing photons. According to the laws of quantum mechanics, photons in the wire have absorbed some of the properties of atoms are close by. Although the photons directly do not interact, in which case they become virtually interconnected and they behaved like particles.
Darius Sadri, one of the researchers involved in the experiment, explains how to make this possible:
“We used a method of mixing of atoms and photons to push photons to interact with each other. The result of this interaction has been the emergence of an entirely new collective behavior of light, similar to the phases of matter, such as liquid crystals and which are studied physics of condensed matter. ”
As a result, scientists have gained a sort of solid light, where photons in space are in a frozen state. The resulting crystals are now very small, but the researchers hope that the system, as well as the most common crystals begin to grow and eventually they will be able to create new interesting materials such as superfluid and insulating materials composed entirely of light.
