Physicists have made a table “gun” on antimatter

An international team of physicists working at the University of Michigan, has succeeded in creating a desktop antimatter cannon capable of firing short bursts of positrons. In his paper, which was published in Physical Review Letters, the team describes how they built the gun, it is capable of and what benefits can bring.

Positrons – antiparticles is opposite to the electrons. They are produced in physical laboratories, but in addition they can be found in the jets spewing black holes and pulsars. Today, the creation of positrons for the study is a very expensive process, the specter serious machine . One of them – a particle accelerator at CERN. Another device was built by scientists Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, it creates a positron emission by a powerful laser on a tiny gold disc. Another recent work by University of Texas researchers describes the construction of a particle accelerator table. “Cannon”, by the way, takes as a basis for the job: the device is not more than a meter in length, capable of generating short bursts of electrons and positrons. The principle of operation is extremely similar to that used by black holes and pulsars.

To achieve these results, the team petawatt laser irradiates the sample inert gas – helium. In the process, create a stream of electrons moving at high speed. They, in turn, forwarded to a very thin sheet of metal foil, which was divided into individual metal atoms. The collision causes the electrons and positrons which are separated into two streams magnets.

Researchers report that a gun shot lasts just 30 femtoseconds, but each produces a volley of quadrillions of positrons – such a density comparable to that being sought at CERN. The scientists believe that their device can be used to simulate the jets emanating from black holes, pulsars, and will help to answer the questions the separation of particles in these jets. Furthermore, such a study may show how the particles will interact with the environment in which they exit through jets.

Who knows, maybe the aliens are in full swing these guns. You need to prepare.
