Niantic releases an update this week for Pokémon Go that adds a Friends feature and Trading. Players can add each other as a friend and then swap Pokémon and items. This is only possible if players are physically close to each other.

Players can send each other a friend request in Pokémon Go by entering a Trainer Code. If the request is accepted, the players stand together on the Friends List. Then they can increase their Friendship Level by doing different things together, such as fighting in a raid, exchanging and distributing Gifts.

Swap Pokémon works when players are close to each other and have reached at least level ten. Exchanging Pokémon costs Stardust and exchanging rare specimens, such as legendary Pokémon, costs a hefty investment. At the minimum friendship level that is a million Stardust. The higher the friendship level, the lower the costs to exchange. At the maximum level that is forty thousand Stardust for a Legendary.

For swapping special Pokémon, such as Legendaries, Shinies and Pokémon that are not yet in the Pokédex of a player, a Special Trade is needed. Such an exchange can be performed once a day with a Great Friend or Best Friend.

With the arrival of the new functions, so-called Gifts come to the game. Players can find them by turning to PokéStops and Gyms. These Gifts consist of a collection of items and must be given to a friend on the friends list. Gifts can contain special eggs from which an Alolan form Pokémon can come. These are yellow eggs for which players have to walk seven kilometers to hatch them.

Bonuses are unlocked by increasing the mutual Friendship Level. If players have a high friendship level and fight together in a Gym or during a Raid, it is evident in an Attack bonus. The friendship level can be increased once per friend per day.

Niantic explains the new features in a blog , and says that the Trading and Friends will be available later this week. Niantic usually brings new functions to the game on Thursday evening Dutch time. Trading and Friends are the second big update for Pokémon Go this year. In March Niantic added missions to the smartphone game that came out in 2016.
