The makers of FingerKey found a way to unlock a Mac computer via TouchID fingerprint scanner on the iPhone. The software allows multiple computers to be unlocked and must eventually also get support for Windows and Linux.

Interested parties can FingerKey an amount of 1.79 euro download in the App Store. The software can be paired with a Mac, and it’s possible to unlock the computer with the FingerKey application by using the TouchID fingerprint sensor. So users do not have to enter their password, which can possibly be safer in public spaces. There is also a notification widget available to the center, causing the app itself does not need to be opened.

Connections are made via a Bluetooth 4.0 connection and are secured with 256bit AES encryption. FingerKey currently only works with Macs, but the developer promises to work on support for Windows and Linux. FingerKey can create connections among multiple computers.

The developer warns that there are problems with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. An update, which appears in the short term, should ensure that FingerKey also works on the latest iPhones. Work is also underway to support the so-called pattern unlock, in which a computer can be unlocked by drawing a pattern on the touchscreen.
