Processor is in first PlayStation spacecraft to Pluto

The New Horizons spacecraft is on its way to Pluto, which contains the same MIPS processor as the CPU that was in the first PlayStation by Sony to find. It is a space suitable for MIPS R3000 processor made.

The MIPS R3000 CPU, a 32 bit RISC processor, came in 1988 on the market and is widely used in all kinds of electronics. The CPU is then processed as the first PlayStation console from Sony. Since the processor running at a clock speed of 33MHz. One of the features is the limited instruction set, a feature which is described by some programmers as ‘elegant’.

The design of the R3000 processor is also in the taste cases at NASA. The processor is in a special embodiment made for suitable space located in the space probe New Horizons. The probe is about to arrive at the planet Pluto.

The custom processor called Mongoose-V was built by the firm Synova. The clock rate is lowered to 12MHz and a special protective layer to protect the CPU from cosmic radiation.
