Professor: LED bulbs have the same processing power as smartphones now




LED bulbs in the house to get in the future the same processing power at their disposal as smartphones have now. That says Professor Harald Haas, who researches LIFI, a working Internet connection through light pulses.

Haas researches LIFI, a technology to transmit Internet signals over short distances by means of light pulses on high frequencies. With existing red, green and blue LEDs pulled his research team speeds of 100Mbit / s, but through customized LEDs and systems LIFI must be able to carry signals with 15Gbit / s over in the future. An advantage over wifi would be lower latency, while a disadvantage is that two points together should be able to ‘see’: the signal can not go through walls.

The investigation into LIFI running for years. The chance is there that the telecom authority ITU LIFI will record as 5g standard. The current expectation is that 5g will consist of a mix of technologies that can work on a network; LIFI can thereby provide Internet connections over short distances.
