ProRail will use bigdatatechnologie to predict at the track failures and wear better. This will reduce the company’s delays in train traffic. To that end establishes a Datalab which ProRail will collect and analyze data streams.

ProRail said to have a press release about “baking with data. This data is already being used in accordance with the railway systems, but has not yet been previously used in conjunction for a data-analysis. ProRail will now combine these data to predict failures. To this end, data on all equipment and infrastructure analyzed in the outdoors, such as rails, switches, train protection and signaling. In addition, is searched for links between data on the track structure, surface, work, weather conditions and the amount of trains on a portion of the track.

In addition to predicting faults ProRail also focuses on reducing rail runners. According to the company that there are three thousand a year, which co every day to make a contribution to the delays. ProRail says to combine their own data with dozens of external data sources in the field of population, weather, holidays and area characteristics. With this, the company has a prototype of a model to predict where and when problems may be expected from people along the track.

Computer systems are used to analyze the data and to recognize dressings. According to ProRail involving some relationships that are so complex or unexpected that they can not be recognized without the data model. ProRail says to consult with experts as a starting point to understand the problems. Subsequently, the data is analyzed and made a model that predicts the problematic situations. Experts consider then on again. This process ProRail just want to repeat as many times until the predictive power of the data model is good enough for practical application.

A spokesman for ProRail says to Tweakers that is now a total of eight people at ProRail engaged in data models. “ProRail has been two years in the process of setting up the Datalab, especially to make it reliable and to see what data we can and can not use in the context of privacy laws,” the spokesman said. He calls the data models used “is a device where it expects much.

This data project, ProRail is working with suppliers, carriers, contractors, TNO, the University of Twente and Delft University of Technology. According to the spokesman, ProRail will bring all the data together, which mainly help the research institutes to develop the models.
