Be Light, which on Tuesday a broadcast devoted to the problem, discovered that thousands of Internet users, companies and institutions an anonymous ftp server were linked to the Internet. On those servers were often sensitive personal documents such as scans of passports.

The problem is compounded by the existence of FTP search engines, which open on ftp servers for files can be searched. That way you can easily find private data on FTP servers, with a search like ‘passport’ or ‘budget’.

All major Dutch providers, including Ziggo and KPN have affected customers contacted in recent days. In many cases, users have the servers does not put deliberately open. The problem occurs when users have connected a network with an anonymous ftp server to a router relaying traffic, for example, because users have run tampering with the UPnP settings. The FTP server can then make sure that port 21 is open put. On some routers, this option is even default.
