Proximus and Huawei achieve 1Tbit / s over fiber optic backbone

Proximus network with Huawei describes itself as a world first by using a single ‘super channel “to send on a fiber backbone of his 1Tbit / s of data. The Belgian telco thinks the technology can scale the capacity of its backbone.

Fiberglass Proximus used in the test the optical switch node OSN 9800 platform of Huawei and called OTN -lijnkaart. The companies managed over a distance of 1040 kilometers to achieve a throughput of 1Tbit / s by making use of a so-called ‘super channel’. According Proximus has with this speed a world first in hands.

Transmission technology could significantly increase the capacity of fiber backbone connections by compressing the gaps between transmission channels. This would yield an efficiency of 150 percent over 100Gbit / s connections to the core network.

Proximus expects to deploy the technology in the future 200Gbit / s channels on the backbone quick to upgrade to 400Gbit / s. In the longer term rates up 1Tbit / s are achievable using the existing optical platform and the racks are reusable.
