Proximus customers will no longer be able to access Fon hotspots

Customers from the Belgian telecom giant Proximus can no longer use Fon hotspots from 1 January 2019. Proximus ends the cooperation because, due to the disappearance of high roaming charges in the EU, there is less need for internet access via hotspots.

“On 1 January, access to the Fon network will indeed be deactivated”, says Proximus spokesperson Fabrice Gansbeke against Tweakers. The Belgian BeMobile.be website reported a few weeks ago that Proximus wanted to cancel the collaboration with Fon, but that news was officially confirmed on Tuesday.

As the main reason for the decision, Proximus mentions the disappearance of high roaming tariffs within Europe, as a result of which consumers can also make cheap mobile internet without a Wii hotspot. According to Gansbeke, the number of customers who actively use the hotspots has dropped dramatically.

In Belgium, subscribers can continue to use the Proximus Smart Wi-Fi service, a network of around 1.3 million hotspots with shared access via the routers of other Proximus customers. According to Gansbeke, Smart Wi-Fi is not only faster than the Fon method, but also fewer steps are needed to establish a connection. Proximus subscribers are informed of the changes via their monthly statement. Customers who currently still actively use the Fon hotspots will also receive a text message one of these days.

The agreement between Proximus Group, then still Belgacom, and Fon dates from 2011. KPN has been working with the international Wi-Fi provider since 2013. KPN has not yet answered the question whether the company is also considering terminating the collaboration with Fon.
