Qualcomm announces 802.11ay chipsets for wireless 4k

and vr streams at 60GHz
Qualcomm has announced two chipsets that are based on the 802.11ay Wi-Fi standard. The chipsets enable 10Gbit / s connections via 60GHz and according to the company are suitable for streaming to VR glasses.

The line 802.11ay chipsets from Qualcomm consist of the QCA6438 and QCA6428 for routers and the QCA6421 and QCA6431 for mobile applications. They allow the streaming of 4k video and VR and ar images, as well as casting from mobile phones to multiple screens.

In addition , Qualcomm points to the possibilities of using 60 GHz signals for sensors that can register proximity, movement and faces. The bandwidth would also be high enough to serve as a wireless gigabit backhaul . Manufacturers can immediately purchase the chipsets from Qualcomm.

Qualcomm 60GHz wifi

The WiFi 802.11ay standard is the successor to the 802.11ad variant, which also operates via 60GHz and was initially known as WiGig. Thanks to the bundling of four streams, the ay-successor has a bandwidth of 8.64 GHz instead of the 2.16 GHz of 802.11ad. In addition, there is support for mu-mimo.

The theoretical speed of 802.11ay can thus reach 40Gbit / s and the maximum distance of up to 500 meters. Qualcomm has 60GHz WiFi under the mmWave spectrum, where it also drops 5g bands above 24GHz.
