Qualcomm said on Thursday it had shown how electric cars can be charged wirelessly while driving, a technology that some believe will help accelerate the adoption of self-driving cars.

The so-called “dynamic shipping” was conducted on a test track in Versailles, France, the chip maker said. In the test, the Renault Kangu cars were used on a built-in platform that transported energy to car batteries with a 20 kilowatt rate of transmission with highway speeds.

Experts believe that future self-driving cars will be electric and require a means of charging themselves without human intervention. Wireless shipping is an important area of research for automakers, suppliers and startups, such as xChargepoint, WiTricity, and HEVO Power.

Qualcomm, which manufactures Android smartphones and tablets as well as Apple, is on track to become the main supplier of the fast-growing car chip market because of its acquisition of NXP Semiconductors for $ 38 billion.

The electric vehicle charging market is one of the areas in which Qualcomm seeks to achieve a pre-existing growth as it seeks to reduce its dependence on the smartphone market, which is not growing.

Qualcomm CEO Steven Mulnkopf described car technology and Internet stuff, a concept that includes household items such as cars, refrigerators, air conditioning and other Internet-related products, as “a tremendous opportunity” for the company.
