Research shows link between location and depression to – update

Smartphones can be used in the future in order to establish depressions in humans. That suggests recent survey by the American Northwestern University. The researchers mapped the locations of people with depression identified.

The researchers of the scientists asked 40 adults to share a few weeks GPS data. The data were derived from the open source app Purple Robot for Android, which the scientists developed specifically for the study. 28 adults were ultimately able to share the data because the other participants could not correctly transmit their data. Of the 28 participants was half “healthy” and the other half had symptoms of depression, ranging from mild to severe symptoms.

Purple Robot can have different data readout from an Android phone. So it can record include where someone comes, how many Facebook friends a person has and whether the display of the smartphone on or off. For this study, only the GPS data and the rate of telephone use is registered. Purple Robot recorded every five minutes location.

The researchers looked at the first stationary states there were per person. They wanted to know which among other locations were part of the work and which at the house. Once someone went for a walk and came above a certain threshold, fresh prong idling. The scientists clustered locations with K-means , a common kwantisatietechniek for data research. That way they could determine the exact number of states.

The research showed that a person who shows symptoms of depression compared to a “healthy” person rather tends to stay in one place. Also, it seems that he or she often uses a telephone and for a longer time, but follow-up studies with more participants must confirm this to connect to further conclusions there.

The researchers published their findings Thursday in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, but the results are also online consult . They conclude their research by saying that although the study was limited, the results could open new doors for health care. For example, a software warning to a healthcare provider as soon as the location data show that someone is likely to be depressed.
