Researcher automates quality of Wikipedia articles




UvA researcher Xinyi Li has developed an automatic method to assess the quality of Wikipedia pages. Since Wikipedia runs on contributions of people with different opinions, it is sometimes difficult to determine whether the content is correct.

Wikipedia fpa Li presented the model of the research which he is recently included in the “European Conference on Information Retrieval” in Vienna. One of the problems that Wikipedia gray area is that of all Wikipedia articles only a small part manual on quality can be assessed. To estimate all pages on value, an automatic evaluation method is needed.

The method Li presented , except make the content, use of information on who has contributed to an article. Most articles are written by more than one person, but not everyone contribute equally. Also shows that the majority of the authors only writes about a limited number of subjects. To achieve the best results, a combination between information from existing, manual evaluations of articles and software Li, something the authors a usable solution for the quality of the articles.

By not only looking at the content of an article, but also to the expertise and the number of contributions from authors, is the method by Li’s easier to judge the quality of an article. In this way, automated warnings there could be given. Now there are occasional warnings to articles if references are missing, as there is little text, or if the writing style is not objective.
