Researchers make telescope ten Canon 400mm lenses




Researchers from the University of Toronto have developed a telescope called Dragonfly that uses ten Canon 400mm f / 2.8L IS II USM lenses. The system is intended to detect with a very low brightness objects.

The used lenses are Canon 400mm f / 2.8L IS II USM lenses, currently commercially available from 9800 euros . Behind each lens a SBIG STF8300 camera is attached. The professional, monochrome cameras feature a 8.3 megapixel Four Thirds sensor from Kodak and designed for astrophotography. Lens and camera are coupled to each other with a lens controller, which controls the autofocus. The entire system weighs about eighty kilos without the arm.

The system is adjusted by means of interconnected computers, which the researchers wrote software running. The user need only the desired observation targets on to set the main computer and at the end of the evening to download the data. The system continues to work automatically; the main computer determines on the basis of weather data, or data can be collected, and then sends commands to the other computers that control the cameras. The main computer controls the position of the robot arm and the lens focus.

The telescope will be used to figure out how large structures in the universe, such as galaxies have formed. According to common cold dark matter theory grow large galaxies from the agglomeration of smaller specimens. The scientific evidence for this is formed by structures and distortions that occur with that growth.

Although such distortions are observed in some galaxies, like our own Milky Way, scientists have not found them yet in many other galaxies. The Canon lenses in the Dragonfly has a special nano coating in the lens that reduces light scattering inside the lens. The system began in 2013 with three lenses, and has gradually expanded to ten copies. The telescope has been prepared in New Mexico Skies Observatory in the US The location in New Mexico is more suitable for astronomy than Toronto because of the altitude of 2200m above sea level and the much lower light pollution.
