Researchers store system and video in dna
Researchers from the New York Genome Center have proposed an efficient and robust method for storing data in DNA. As a proof-of-concept they managed to save an operating system, video and gift card and get back without errors.
In recent years, great strides have been put in storing data in DNA, but according to researchers at Team Erlich involved in the New York Genome Center, there is room for improvement. They point out that existing methods are not always scale well and usually defective in retrieving the information.
They therefore propose a new method called DNA Fountain for. This strategy would approach the theoretical maximum of the Shannon capacity to store information per nucleotide. When DNA Fountain they process a file in a series of non-overlapping segments with a certain length. Then they encode which in short data packets, droplets, which can be sent over a channel with noise. Dna-storage is in fact similar to a communication channel with noise. The droplets of 38 bytes contain a payloadvan 32 bytes, a seed of 4 bytes and another 2-byte error correcting code. The seed corresponds to the state of the random-number generator at the time of the making of the droplet. As a result, the seed establishes a decoder-state algorithm in the identities of the segments to derive in the droplet.
With their method, the researchers data theoretically unlimited to copy preserves data integrity. In a test they encode added a compressed file of 2,146,816 bytes in DNA. The tarball contains the entire operating system Kolibri, an Amazon gift card of $ 50, a short video and a picture of the gold plate of the Pioneer program . The file they were able to recover completely without errors, wherein the decoding took nine minutes with the aid of a Python script on a standard laptop.
