Revenue cycle with integrated solar panels exceeds expectations

The project Sola Road, a bike lane with integrated solar panels, has an electricity output well above expectations. In six months time is generated 3000 kWh. There will be more cycle paths with solar panels.

The first results from Sola Road are published in the province of North Holland’s website. According to the administrators is generated in six months time 3000 kWh by the panels that form the surface of the bike path. Converted means a yield of 70 kWh per m2 per year. That is more than the upper limit which was calculated on the basis of laboratory tests. As a result SolaRoad according to the province of North Holland success.

SolaRoad yield

Besides electricity output was with SolaRoad also looked at whether a pavement inlaid with solar panels as a “normal” cycle to function. Shortly after its opening in November injury was detected by a peelable top layer. The development of an improved coating, this should not happen again in the future and would SolaRoad cyclists nearly indistinguishable from normal cycle.

SolaRoad is 70 meters long and is located in the northern Dutch town of Krommenie. The surface comprises solar panels that are protected by a glass top layer of 1 cm thick. Then is therefore still a coating to prevent damage. The cycle path was opened in November as a pilot project for three years and was followed with great interest, also by foreign media. There will be a number of cycle routes with solar panels: there is currently talk about.
