There is a Japanese video game genre such as JRPG. This genre has become wildly popular in the mid-80s of last century, when the light appeared the first game series Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. In recent years, the genre has seen steady stagnation, but some studios all means want to bring back the former glory of the once popular game series.

JRPG might alienate a lot of players that in games of this genre is almost always used anime style . Yes, these are the bright and lurid characters from numerous Japanese animated series. Yet behind this facade deliberately childish often hides a very deep and storyline, which can easily give odds to many far more serious view on the Western role-playing games.

Tales of Xillia 2

The second distinguishing feature of the genre Games JRPG – is, without a doubt, carefully selected combat system that constantly evolves and acquires additional details and features. Dozens of intricate game menus, initially not very understandable for beginners who play JRPG for the first time, after a while become for many a revelation. In this can and should play, and sometimes JRPG seem much more interesting than the more well-known in the world role-playing series.

Tales of Xillia 2

The company Namco released the first role-playing game series «Tales of» back in 1995 for 16-bit consoles Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game immediately became a bestseller in Japan, and has brought in many new JRPG genre. For example, it was the first game released on the 48-megabit cartridge, which in those years was just incredibly large volume. Also, the game used the voice samples, and before that in all Japanese RPGs characters interacted only with text messages. The combat system, in contrast to the same Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, reminiscent of a two-dimensional fighting game, when the fights took place in real time, rather than in increments.

Tales of Xillia 2

Tales of Xillia (2011) was the thirteenth game in the series, and the Tales of Xillia 2 (2012), respectively, of the fourteenth. Both games came out on the gaming console Sony PlayStation 3 only because of its popularity among Japanese gamers. And both games have been translated into English until two years after the release of the Japanese version. Localization of such gigantic projects, even in major Japanese publishers sometimes takes a very long time, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Given that in recent years the whole genre JRPG came to this decline, the rates of the Japanese publisher Namco Bandai for these games were really high. There is a risk that if the new parts are not like fans in Japan and in the West, the developers will have to significantly cut the budget subsequent games in the series, and some give up altogether. But, fortunately, the developers have not lost, and the game got a big success in the Land of the Rising Sun, as well as in other countries.

Tales of Xillia 2

Each game in the series «Tales of» offers a totally unique, is not associated with other games storyline, the game world and new characters. But some particularly popular part took on a direct-dimensional continuation to the numerous requests of fans. Despite the fact that today I will tell you about Tales of Xillia 2, you do not have to pass the first part of it, to understand what is happening on the screen, and to figure out who all these people. But with a special wish you right inside the game can see a summary of the plot of the first part of it, read about each character in a special illustrated encyclopedia, in-game, as well, if you really want to completely immerse yourself in the ears with the story, you can just take and pass the first original Tales of Xillia.

Tales of Xillia 2

The game takes place a year after the end of the first part. In the world of Tales of Xillia, people are forced to co-exist in the neighborhood of disembodied spirits. Thanks to the spirits of the people are able to use magic, and based on this peace and the relationship between them. The main character is a guy named Luger Kresnik, who moonlights as a cook in the station cafeteria and always gets into some trouble just incredible.

The fates decreed Luger becomes involved in a government conspiracy, and becomes especially dangerous wanted criminal. Together with its pretty colorful companions, incorporating both characters from the first game, and entirely new personalities, he has to confront the terrorist organizations, crafty politicians and even his own brother, Julius, who for some reason took the side of evil.

Talk in detail about the plot JRPG – like death, since the density of events in these games usually rolls over and plot spoilers may deprive you of a fair share of the fun of the passing game. So I’ll leave the plot alone, but instead rather talk about other aspects of the game.

As I mentioned above, a necessary component of the Japanese role-playing games is designed combat system. Tales of Xillia 2 is no exception to the rule and offers the player a huge scope for tactical planning and fighting. Besides that your chosen character can alone mutuzit opponents, the game offers you to combine efforts with their comrades controlled by artificial intelligence, thanks to a special tactical system. You can ask for any character to help you in battle, or to give him complete freedom of action, then all of its decisions it will take on their own.

During the Battle of the characters use several types of energy. In addition to traditional HP (Hit Points, the number of still life energy, as in fighting games), each character collects and spends scale AC (Assault Counter) and TP (Technical Points), the first of which indicates the number of attacks available, and the second – the points which can be spent on special magical tricks. Thanks to the “links” several characters can pull together an incredibly powerful attack on the enemy.

Bleeding occurs as a traditional accumulation of experience points, and with the help of special spheres of energy, which will equip your characters, you will be able to pump their individual skills. All of this is easier to see during the game, rather than to describe in words.

The game can be divided into two modes: a mode of study, when the character is walking around the city and dungeons, and battle mode, when the team fights with opponents. Mode of study will allow you to communicate with the inhabitants of towns and villages, as well as search for various hidden objects, perform numerous quests and all – as much as possible to experience the world of the game for yourself. While the battle mode will allow you to pump the main characteristics and master the strategic component of the game in the battles against ordinary enemies and powerful bosses.

Another distinctive feature of the series «Tales of» is the ability to cook a meal of the available products in the stores. Recipes for different dishes you can come up with yourself, through trial and error, or to receive them for the implementation of various topical tasks. Vegan food can be used in the battle to improve the characteristics of the individual or a snack between fights, so, for example, during the battle your characters gain more experience. This cooking system first appeared in the very first games of the series, and is invariably used since each new part.

Tales of Xillia 2

Visually, the game is made very high quality, however it would be interesting to see how it would look on the PlayStation 4. Despite the fact that the characters meet all anime-style, to a picture you get used to pretty quickly and even imbued with a deep sense of empathy heroes . When you move to locations in the game uses a third-person, and in some moments it is possible to communicate with the members of his team. Such conversations are activated the Select button on the controller DualShock 3. During interviews, you can learn more about that in the mind of your companions, hear their stories, in other words – they will be much closer to you as you progress through.

Tales of Xillia 2

Another important new feature is the ability to play at certain moments of the narrative to take a certain choice. The game is paused and you are shown two ways to proceed from which you select one that is suitable to your personal perception of the situation. Sometimes, if the situation so requires, the commission is given the choice of quite a bit of time. In those moments, you have to figure out all the pros and cons and to act as quickly as possible. Depending on your choice, the game’s plot can be developed in several slightly differing directions, also depend on it and the relationship between the protagonist and the members of his team.

Tales of Xillia 2

Modern video games are different from its predecessors in that the publishers have become more practical and seek the maximum return on development using supplements paid DLC (Downloadable Content). This monetization model reached up to the east, so that now you can purchase a variety of games, “buns” for a surcharge. In Tales of Xillia 2, you can charge dress up their characters in a different style, as well as purchase for them especially powerful weapons and magic accessories. Fortunately, this function is completely optional, so spend their hard earned money no one forced you to not force.

Tales of Xillia 2

The only thing that I was very upset in the passing game – it’s an English dub. Americans have repeatedly proven that are not able to articulate Japanese video games, take my word, I’m on this sёl than one dog. Some publishers have specifically allowed on disc Japanese audio track, the player can activate it at any time, if it grates on the ear mediocre game American actors. But in Tales of Xillia 2 of this choice you no give. Have to wince from the replay and totally ridiculous voices that little match the characters that you see on the TV screen.

Tales of Xillia 2

By the same music no claim I did not have – all very worthy (even the opening song by Japanese pop diva Ayumi Hamasaki available) and this soundtrack does not get tired for tens of hours pass, which you probably take this game. Yes, another JRPG Unlike other role-playing games – it’s just a huge duration of such games. Some representatives of the genre can take a player more than 100 hours. And it is quite rare JRPG can be completed in 30 hours or less of possession.

To talk about this game I can for a long time, but it’s time to sum up all of the above.

Pros:

Very deep story that continues to keep you at the screen for dozens of hours.
Beautiful fantasy world that I want to explore from beginning to end.
Unique combat system that has become far more complex and sophisticated.
Crazy amount of secondary quests and opportunities to take your time.
Huge length of the game.

Cons:

A little outdated graphics, thanks to the fact that the game was developed for the PS3.
Lack of Japanese dubbing.
May deter many anime-style game.
Part in the game are used to draw from the first part.

My assessment of the game Tales of Xillia 2 – 7 out of 10. If this game to add a bit of visual polish and release it in the guise of the updated console Sony PlayStation 4, but to provide an alternative Japanese voice acting – she would have received from me is much more appreciated. But even in this version of the game can and should play to all fans of the genre JRPG, which, in my opinion, a renaissance thanks to such projects. I recommend to try the game, even those gamers who with JRPG never crossed. It may well be that you will discover a whole new world.

The game has been passed by the PlayStation 3. for providing a copy of the game would like to thank the company “New CD”.
