Robots fire guard your safety

“Hurry up, send a robot!”. Imagine that this is what they say firefighters in the very near future, when the arrive at the scene. Currently being developed fire robots several types: some are designed to not hesitate to rush into the thick of the others will be engaged in intelligence operations until such time as a burning building will not include real fire, giving them the necessary information about the what to expect and where exactly the situation is most difficult. Just the car from the second category – FFR – are developing at the University of California at San Diego.

To look at the robot looks like a smaller version of the portable vehicle Segway: it has two wheels, RGB video (stereoscopic survey), and an infrared camera to detect the source of fire. In addition, the robot is equipped with a “foot”, which allows him to go up and down stairs and overcome obstacles.

The idea is that a few of FFR (from the English. Firefighting Robot, that is a robot firefighter) will enter into a burning building, and then independently and jointly explore the interior of the premises, using three cameras to create a 3D-card with indicators of the level of temperature. These data have been able to avoid these firefighters over the dangerous point in a burning building, as well as discover caught in a dangerous situation (trapped) people.

In addition, the robot has a sensor that can provide information about the presence of the building the concentration of hazardous substances, such as gas stoves, as well as the structural integrity of the building.
All data will be transmitted by robots wirelessly in real time. When these firefighters enter a burning building, they already will know exactly where to start, where to go and how to get to the trapped victim with less risk to themselves .

View on a functioning prototype of the FFR can be in the video.
