Rumor: AMD plans to split up
AMD would reportedly investigating a break-up of its business units. Therefore, the company would like to improve its competitiveness against rival Intel. However, there would be no decision has been taken yet.
That says it usually well-informed Reuters based on three unnamed sources who might have knowledge of the plans. The research is still at an early stage and no decisions yet, say the sources. There would be a consulting company in the arm taken to investigate whether a split can be beneficial. A spokesman for AMD denies told Reuters that splitting is considered.
One of the options that could be considered is to cleave the GPU-branch. AMD has since 2006 owned GPU manufacturer ATI, thereby allowing the company as it were on their feet would face. By business units separate from each other to allow AMD would operate more competitive with rival Intel, those are the rumors. On the processor market, the company can currently only difficult to compete so that the market share has declined in recent times.
