Rumor: distressed Ouya is for sale

Ouya, the company behind the eponymous cube-shaped console with Android, is in financial trouble. This was reported by Fortune, based on an email that got hold of the blade. Before the end of the month the company would like to have found a potential buyer.

Fortune based on a confidential e-mail-Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman would be sent to investors and advisors. In 2013 Ouya fetched $ 15 million, representing a 13.7 million euro, up by investors. In addition, the money borrowed from Triple Point Capital. According to Fortune Ouya would now have problems paying off that loan, despite the recent investment of 10 million US dollars of Chinese Internet giant Alibaba.

Uhrman according to Fortune writes in the email that negotiations to restructure the debts of the company were not successful. In order not to succumb to the payment, the company should be sold quickly. “We are looking for the end of the month interest,” writes Uhrman according to Fortune.

Ouya started in 2012, a Kickstarter campaign to bring the same console on the market. That was soon successful. The promoters, including some big names in the industry, took over $ 8.5 million; the initial target amount was $ 950,000. The console costs $ 99. Originally all games required free playable, but Ouya climbed from last year. Inside is a Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of memory. The device runs a modified version of Android.

The founders wanted to create an open platform with Ouya. So anyone can create a game and is the open source software. That should make it easy for developers to release games. Although now about 1100 games in Ouya’s collection are available, the little console proved itself less successful. Therefore Ouya expanded itself as platform. Last year the company signed a contract to also bring out the game collection on set-top boxes Xiaomi. As part of the investment in Alibaba would Ouya games also appear on devices that company.
