Rumor: Facebook wants to take over ‘big’ security company




Facebook has reportedly approached several security companies for a takeover. The company may complete a takeover of a ‘large’ security company before the end of the year.

That message at least The Information , which relies on information from two people who are familiar with the plans of Facebook. The sources did not mention names of potential acquisition candidates, but Facebook would strive to take over a ‘big’ security company.

Not only should such an acquisition provide Facebook with expertise on security, but the company would also like to polish its image and show that it takes its security seriously. That image gained considerable damage last year, thanks to the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the recent hack , which according to Facebook hit 30 million users.

With the acquisition, Facebook will probably also acquire software that can be integrated into its existing services and help to secure user accounts. In August, the chief security officer left Facebook, allegedly due to disagreement about the approach to disinformation. There were also rumors that Facebook had dismantled its security team and had accommodated employees in other departments.
