Rumor: Sony develops watch that is full of electronic paper

Sony develops a watch made entirely of electronic paper and wants the wearable release next year, claiming financial news agency Bloomberg. The watch should not be cluttered with functionality, but must have its design.

Both the clock and the tape is an e-paper made where Sony has patents on, says Bloomberg, based on a source within Sony. The use of the material ensures that the entire watch serves as a screen.

Yet it is not a wearable that area of functionality with smart watches to compete. Bloomberg cites research by Nomura Research Institute, showing that consumers see the appearance of wearables as the third most important obstacle to a purchase, after price and weight. Sony already has a fitness bracelet with e-paper screen, the Smart Band .

The watch has to be the first product that comes from the pen of Sony’s new division for innovation. That division was established this year and is under the direct leadership of CEO Kazuo Hirai. The branch must accelerate the market introduction of promising prototypes. Not only internal should receive a boost as well as projects of third parties. There is also the Seed Acceleration Program that encourages ideas from employees themselves.
