Twitter plans to remove the limit of 140 characters for tweets for late March. The limit of 140 characters is the most characteristic element of the messaging. The timeline would be for users nevertheless should continue to look the same.

Twitter would consider to display still 140 characters and then via a button to enable users to expand a tweet, so they can see the rest of the tweet.
