WhatsApp would work on a desktop client for Windows and OS X. At this time, WhatsApp only be used on desktops with a web version. Many users have been asking for years for a desktop client for instant messaging.

The Twitter account WABetaInfo reports that clients are coming and @turinconiphone responded with a screen that appears to confirm the information. The screenshot is from a program where volunteers translate texts for WhatsApp. It says Download for Mac OS X Download for Windows as options, something that should be a new download page.

WhatsApp is currently only used by smartphone and using the web version in the browser. It is unknown whether the clients for desktop, just like the web version, would require that the smartphone is online. Among other competitor Telegram has long had a desktop client that does not require, but Telegram stores messages on its own servers, where WhatsApp does not.

The Web version of WhatsApp was January last year for the first time online. It is unknown if and when the software for OS X and Windows should appear.
