Find a Question:
Russia will build the world’s first floating nuclear power plant by 2016
Russia has oklemalas after a failed takeoff rocket “Proton-M” and is willing to share more good news. It seems that the work on the project’s first floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) “Academician Lomonosov” almost complete. Several sources report that the facility will be commissioned in 2016.
The primary purpose of floating nuclear power plant is to produce electricity for large industrial and port cities, as well as oil and gas platforms located in the open sea or ocean.
It should be noted that the floating nuclear power plant meets all required safety standards, so nuclear reactors are immune to the tsunami and are not afraid of collisions with other vessels or land. Moreover, nuclear reactors meet all the stringent standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), so no hazardous substances into the environment during operation is not forthcoming.
FNTPP “Academician Lomonosov” is equipped with two engines modified KLT-40, capable of producing enough electricity to fully meet the needs of a city of 200,000 people.
Floating nuclear power plants can also be used as desalination plants, which can produce 240,000 cubic meters of fresh water daily. Floating nuclear power plants have a very great potential, but they still have a huge number of safety tests, because no one needs an ecological disaster in the middle of the ocean.
At present, interest in the project showed more than 15 countries, including China, Argentina, Indonesia and Malaysia.
