Russian and Chinese intelligence services listen to calls from Trump

Russian and Chinese intelligence services would overhear private telephone calls from US President Donald Trump. That claims the newspaper The New York Times. This is possible because Trump uses a non-secure smartphone for communication.

The intelligence services want to hear through the private conversations with whom Trump speaks and for which arguments he is susceptible to discussions, reports The New York Times . They hope to influence the American president better than would be possible without the eavesdropping. Other countries often try to influence heads of state for their own benefit. It is unknown how often listening to phone calls is part of this.

US presidents have a secure telephone that handles conversations in other ways than normal smartphones to prevent eavesdropping. Chinese and Russian intelligence services would not have hacked Trump’s smartphone, an iPhone, but eavesdropping would happen in the connection between Trump’s phone and the other party somewhere in the mobile network. Mobile phone networks that are still in use for many telephone calls have been considered unsafe for years.

According to South China Morning Post, the Chinese government denies talks via Trump’s telephone. A spokesman told the newspaper that the New York Times article is ‘fake news’, a reference to Trump’s frequent use of that term. The spokesman also advises Trump to use a Huawei smartphone. The American government is preventing the sale of Huawei smartphones in the US, because they are afraid that espionage takes place via those smartphones.

Update, 17.00 : Trump claims to rarely use his mobile phone and only to do that with government auth horistation.
