Russia started Monday blocking the chatapp Telegram and this blockade also appears to have consequences for various online services from Google and Amazon. Users mention, for example, online games and apps that no longer work.

Roskomnadzor, the Russian telecom watchdog, has blocked a total of approximately 1.8 million IP addresses belonging to Amazon and Google according to the Russian website Meduza. More than one million IP addresses from Google servers are blocked, while some 800,000 server addresses from Amazon Web Services are banned. The blockade of these IP addresses is set because Telegram has used servers from Amazon and Google in an attempt to escape the ban.

Because so many IP addresses are blocked, the blockade of Telegram also has consequences for Internet users who want to use certain services from Amazon and Google. A user reports on Twitter that a number of online games are no longer working due to the blockade of IP addresses from Amazon. Another user reports that the blockade has also paralyzed two mobile providers.

On Friday, the Moscow Court of Appeal ruled that Telegram should be blocked in Russia. The court came to this judgment after a request from Roskomnadzor. The wish of the telecom watchdog to block the chat app is related to Telegram’s refusal to hand over the private keys to the FSB information service. With these keys, authorities can access the communication of Telegram users.

The blockade went into effect on Monday, with Roskomnadzor asking Google and Apple to remove the Telegram from the Play Store and the App Store. The site Apkmirror claims to have received a request from Roskomnadzor to make the Telegram-apk inaccessible to Russian users. In the meantime, the regulator is investigating the use of proxies and VPN services, with which the blockade of Telegram can be circumvented. Perhaps the authority will also take measures against these services.
