Samsung achieved a much lower turnover and profit in the quarter than in the same quarter a year earlier. In the coming months the manufacturer hopes for better figures through the arrival of the Galaxy S10 and a foldable smartphone.

In the presentation of the quarterly figures , Samsung mentions the arrival of the Galaxy S10 itself for the first time. The manufacturer already sent invitations for the presentation for a new smartphone on February 20, but the type number is now officially confirmed. Samsung thinks that the Galaxy S10 smartphones will sell well and that more sales will be achieved. According to rumors, four variants of the Galaxy S10 come out.

Samsung also confirms in the explanation of the figures that it will release a foldable smartphone and a 5g device. The name of the foldable phone is still unknown. Samsung showed a prototype in November last year. Samsung also wants to keep users within its ecosystem by releasing the Bixby assistant on more devices. The assistant must also become smarter.

Furthermore, Samsung says that the chip division currently concentrates on 7nm production with euv, but that in the second half of this year the development of a 5nm process with euv will be completed. Samsung says the chip division will expand its customer base by 40 percent this year. That means that more manufacturers will have their chips made by the chip division of Samsung, but which companies are, is not known. Production at the 7nm-euv process started at the end of last year, although Samsung said that there will only be capacity in 2020 for customers who need a lot of chips. Mass production at 5nm will probably only take place afterwards.

The quarterly turnover of Samsung was 59.3 trillion Korean won, about 46.3 billion euros. This meant that turnover was about 10 percent lower than in the same quarter last year. The operating profit came to 10.8 trillion won, a drop of 29 percent. The figures do not come as a surprise, earlier this month Samsung warned that the quarterly figures would be disappointing because the chip and smartphone divisions did not do as well as hoped.
