Samsung releases Galaxy S10, S10 + and S10e on 8 March

Samsung has officially announced its Galaxy S10 smartphones. The S10 and S10 + get three cameras and an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner behind the screen. The S10e is a cheaper model with two cameras, without curved screen edges.

The dimensions of the S10 + and S10 are almost identical to those of the S9 + and S9, but the new models have slightly larger screen diagonals, of 6.4 “and 6.1″, with a 19: 9 ratio. The screen now goes further up and in the screen there is a hole for the front camera. At the S10 + that hole is bigger, to offer space to the two front cameras. The second front camera is a copy with a wide-angle lens.

Both the Galaxy S10 + and the regular S10 get three cameras on the back and all have a lens with a different focal length. The primary camera uses a 12-megapixel sensor and an f / 1.5 lens with an angle of view of 77 degrees. In addition, there is a camera with a telephoto lens with an angle of view of 45 degrees, with an aperture of f / 2.4 and also a 12-megapixel sensor. The third camera is a 16-megapixel sensor with a f / 2.2 ultra-wide-angle lens, with an angle of view of 123 degrees. The primary camera and the telecamera have optical image stabilization.

The Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus have an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner behind the OLED screen. Manufacturers such as OnePlus, Oppo and Vivo released devices with a fingerprint scanner behind the screen last year, but they use an optical scanner, which has to look between the pixels of the OLED screen. This does not work with screens with a very high pixel density, so Samsung uses a different technique. The ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is also faster than the optical scanners.

Samsung stops its Exynos 9820-soc in the new top models. The soc presented the manufacturer last year and is made at 8nm. The chip consists of three clusters and has two Exynos M4 cores, which according to Samsung are up to twenty percent faster than the M3 cores. The other two clusters consist of two ARM Cortex A75 cores and four Cortex A55 cores. The soc also has an npu for accelerating machine learning. Other manufacturers have had such a neural processing unit in their socs for some time. Huawei has since the Kirin 970 and Apple since the A11 Bionic. Current Qualcomm-socs do not have that yet, but in the coming Snapdragon 855 there is also a chip for ai acceleration.

The modem that is integrated in the Exynos 9820-soc does not have 5g support, but supports higher 4g speeds than the modem in the Exynos 9810 of the S9 devices. It is a theoretical maximum download speed of 2Gbit / s and 316MBit / s upload. In the specifications of the Galaxy S10, Samsung calls a maximum upload speed of 150Mbit / s.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 devices are the first smartphones with WiFi 802.11ax support. They are also the first clients that can handle the new WiFi standard. To make use of this, 802.11ax router is also required, a number of which are now for sale. The maximum Wi-Fi speed of the S10 devices is 1.2Gbit / s on paper, both download and upload.

Like the previous S models, the S10 + and S10 are made of glass. The housing is slightly thinner with 7.8mm than the S9 models, but the battery capacity is 4100mAh and 3400mAh larger. For comparison: the S9 + and S9 are 8.5mm thick and have batteries with a capacity of 3500mAh and 3000mAh. There are dualsimversions of the Galaxy S10 and variants where one SIM card fits. All versions offer space for a micro SD card with a capacity of up to 512GB.

In addition to the S10 and S10 +, Samsung is introducing a third model, the S10e. This is a cheaper version, with a smaller screen that has a lower resolution and no curved edges. The S10e also does not have a fingerprint scanner behind the screen, but a regular copy that is incorporated in the side of the housing. The Galaxy S10e has two instead of three cameras on the back, the camera with telelens is missing.

From March 8, Samsung’s new Android top models will be available. Of the regular S10 there are two variants, with 128GB or 512GB flash storage and suggested retail prices of 899 and 1149 euros. The S10 + comes in three flavors, with prices of 999, 1249 and 1599 euros. The most expensive version has 12GB ram and 1TB flash storage. One version of the S10e, with 6GB of ram and 128GB of flash storage, will be available for 749 euros.

Tweakers could try the S10 models shortly before the introduction and has published a preview .
