Samsung will add Europe ads to main menu screen TVs

Samsung will also show in Europe ads on its smart TVs. The Korean company has this change previously made in the US market. The ads should be displayed in the main menu of the TV’s.

Samsung logo (27 pix) The change should take effect in the next few months in Europe, as reported The Wall Street Journal citing sources. This would happen in older models on the basis of a software update. The ads should be displayed as tiles in the main menu, in addition to apps like Netflix and YouTube. When a user selects one of these ads, it is intended that there is interaction, for example by a quiz. In the past, Samsung showed all ads in a small window next to apps, but that was when the app page of older versions of its smart TV software.

The decision is part of an effort to go beyond just selling TVs, as the newspaper reports further. Samsung would suffer from a declining market and its profit margins are between three and five per cent under pressure. The company sells an estimated 50 million television sets a year, with a global market share of 50 percent.

The expansion of the advertisements is directed by the same person responsible to Samsung for cooperation with companies such as Netflix, which Samsung will receive a share of revenue from streaming content.
