Samsung will produce SiP-S1 platform for Apple Watch




For many years Apple is seeking to reduce its purchases from its main competitor in the mobile market Samsung. However, when you want to make an advanced system on chip (system-on-chip, SoC) with ultra-low power consumption in large quantities, the South Korean giant is one of the few who are able to complete the task.


As it became known, Samsung will produce SiP-S1 platform for smart hours Apple Watch. This was reported by the publication Business Korea, citing its own sources.

Instead of the traditional solutions PCB (printed circuit board), as is well known, Apple created a system of SiP. System-in-Package includes all necessary right to operate the device components (sensors, graphics card, memory, etc.) In other words, there is no clock in the conventional system board representation, instead, the processor and the controller is within a single housing. So, Apple has signed a contract for the supply of the microprocessor with Samsung.

IC chip inside Apple S1 should be of a size of a few square millimeters, and have extremely low power consumption, but at the same time provide a sufficiently high computing performance. To create such a chip requires not only top-notch developers, but also finer process technology, sharpened by the device with ultra-low power consumption.


Taking into account that the other partner Apple, the company TSMC, developed 20-nm process technology primarily for systems on a chip for smartphones and tablets, it is likely that this technology can not be used for the production of processors for Apple S1. As a consequence, Apple decided not to use the services of TSMC, and turn to Samsung.
