Schiphol is expanding tests with facial recognition

next year
Schiphol is planning to further expand the facial recognition tests. Testing took place at the gate last year and they were successful according to the airport. In 2019 more tests will follow in which face recognition is used much more widely.

The goal of the expansion is that passengers can move on faster. A spokesman for the airport says to De Telegraaf that it concerns ‘the entire process from check-in via security and passport control, to boarding and automatic tracking and identification’. We cooperate with the Marechaussee, customs and airlines.

Passengers can participate voluntarily in biometric tests, where their faces are scanned. It is then no longer necessary to show a passport or boarding pass. A number of passages are specifically made suitable for face recognition. In 2017 a trial was already carried out with facial recognition.

KLM says it is in favor of technology because it would reduce delays. This is related to the fact that travelers can be better traced via the system. According to Schiphol, the privacy of users is not at issue here. The head of the ‘customer experience’ of KLM says to the website Security that this system must be introduced at Schiphol in a year.
