Scientists build computer-based “molecular motors”

Swedish scientists have found a way to make computers much faster. Where traditional computers do calculations in sequence, they have a way for parallel calculations, by making use of what molecular motors can be mentioned.

The researchers, working at the University of Lund, describe their find in the authoritative scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America . Their computer is able to perform parallel computations because eiwitjes carry out the work. This involves, for example, to the molecules such as myosin and actin protein, which are, inter alia, involved in the muscle contraction in the human body. Myosin is used in the computer model in order to propel other proteins, which are based on actin.

There is a kind of labyrinth built at the nanoscale in which the molecules have to find their way, the result of the maze represents the answer to a math question, so explain the scientists. Because there are many molecules simultaneously in the maze to find their way, the Swedish creators that their principle is similar to what is done in quantum computers to perform calculations. How the protein maze leads to arithmetic is demonstrated outcomes in a movie.

The biological computer could already be deployed in a few years. An advantage of biological computers is not only that they can perform complex calculations faster than conventional computers, but they do so with a much smaller energy. However, the researchers argue that scaling up is needed to create a practically usable bio and necessary optimizations there will still be necessary. But whether the idea can be a competitor of quantum computers being in attendance is not yet clear.
