Scientists develop extremely black material

Scientists have developed a material that is black in such a way, that it is seen as a type of void. With the naked eye That’s because the material almost all the light that falls on it absorbs.

The authors, who are funded by the British company Surrey NanoSystems, set in an interview with The Independent that the material is only 0.0035 percent of the light that falls on it reflected a record. The results are also published in the journal Optics Express. Since the material as far as it absorbs light, it is extremely black. It is so black that the human perceptual system can not distinguish a form more: the material looks like a kind of black hole.

Surrey NanoSystems has called the material VantaBlack and will be demonstrated this week at the Farnborough International Airshow. VantaBlack is made with carbon nano fibers, which are so small that no light can penetrate into the inside, but it may be held between the fibers. There it is eventually absorbed. Thereafter, the light is converted into heat and conducts the material according to the scientists heat 7.5 times better than copper and it is a fiber ten times stronger than steel.

The extreme black material has several potential applications, according to the makers. For example, it can be used for space telescopes and cameras. There are also military applications, but the makers about releasing anything.
