Scientists earthquake detector smartphone

A group of American scientists have found a way to use smartphones for early detection of earthquakes. The system is especially useful in countries that have no money for advanced technology.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA, which has cooperated with the investigation, has set put how the technology works. With the aid of the sensors in smart phones, it is possible to detect early earthquakes and on this basis to build a warning system. That would give people time to find a safe place before strong earthquakes occur.

In order to make the system work the information from multiple smart phones is required: by combining measurements of different devices, the reliability is increased. NASA has conducted a simulation in which a simulated earthquake, and found that less than 5,000 people are needed to rapidly detect an earthquake and send a warning. A disadvantage of the system is that it can only detect earthquakes with a magnitude of 7 or higher on the Richter scale.

According to researchers, a detection system based on smart phones less accurate than professional equipment to detect earthquakes. Yet there are possible applications: countries that have no money for equipment would have put an inexpensive detection system based on smart phones. Large parts of the world have as yet no access to specialized equipment. Moreover, it should also be possible to link the smartphone data with specialized equipment; that could increase the reliability of the data.

It is not yet clear whether there is somewhere an earthquake detector built on smartphone data. Probably, the system must first be further tested.
