Scientists have created a 14-mm implant for blood analysis at the molecular level

Living organisms can be compared to a chemical plant. Each day they produce thousands of different substances that are carried through the body with blood. Some of these substances act as indicators of health status.

A team of scientists from the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne ( EPFL ) in Switzerland have created one of the smallest medical implants with multiple sensors on board, which can analyze the concentration of various substances in the blood and pass the results of analysis by the wireless module to your smartphone or tablet. This unit will be perfect for those people who faint at the sight of blood. Implanted directly under the skin it can identify up to five proteins and organic acids simultaneously.

This method provides a more professional analysis of blood, compared to several analyzes of blood from a finger combined. Doctors will constantly monitor the health of patients, especially those suffering from chronic diseases or undergoing chemotherapy. The project is still in the experimental stage. The results will be released March 20, 2013 during the European Conference on Electronics DATE 2013.

The device was created by a group of scientists led by EPFL Giovanni De Micheli and Sandro Kehrer. With the volume of a few cubic millimeters, it includes five different sensors, radio transmitter and power supply system. Power implant is only 0.1 watts, and nourishes its battery, which is attached to the patient’s skin. So there is no need to resort to surgery every time the battery must be recharged.

In the design of the implant much attention was paid to the development of sensors. To determine these substances in the body as lactate, glucose, or adenosine triphosphate surface of each sensor is covered with a special enzyme.

“In theory, we can find anything.” – Said Dr. De Micheli. “Unfortunately, only a limited period of action of enzymes, and we should make the most of its increase.”

Currently, the term of action of enzymes is about 1.5 months. M. de Micheli says that implant replaced quite easily. He also said that to develop a device that work needs only 0.1 watts, it was quite easy.

According to the researchers, this system will be an important step forward on the way to the future of medicine. In patients with chronic implants can prevent the need for serious treatment, first identifying the most subtle symptoms of their disease progression.
