Scientists have created a DNA “foreign”

After 15 years of work, scientists have successfully created a living cell, which contains at least two components of unnatural DNA . Scientific breakthrough makes scientists are one step closer to the possibility of synthesizing cells able to produce drugs, if necessary. And besides, this discovery opens the door to a future in which we can create living organisms that have never met in the world.

“Before us is actually a living cell that literally contains enhanced set of genetic information,” – explains Romsberg Floyd, head of the research team, the past 15 years engaged in the creation of new life forms.

“Do not be amiss to note that we were able to achieve a harmonious coexistence of life and synthetic genetic material that is very challenging. Yes, we have created a synthetic DNA before, but it’s essentially a new kind of cybernetic DNA and he has much more potential. ”

Journal Nature, provide this information, in turn, believes that scientists in a sense created a “stranger.” All life on Earth contains four types of nitrogenous bases of DNA and components called nucleotides: guanine (G), adenine (A), thymine (T) and cytosine (C). Thanks to the discovery of scientists, science has an opportunity to add to this set of at least two new artificial nucleotide.

Researchers say that now the old model of the four nucleotides of DNA is not the only means to create life. Some experts believe that after this discovery, scientists can even create a living organism with a set of entirely unfamiliar nucleotides. From the words of Steven Benner, a pioneer in the field of similar studies conducted in the 1980s of the last century, new nucleotides are quite similar to four natural.

In an interview with Nature Benner said:

“I think there is no limit. If you go back and re-pass the whole evolutionary process over the past four billion years, it’s likely you’ll get a different genetic system. ”

Opening scientists simultaneously frightening and gives hope. In the end, such studies can help us to discover drugs to treat diseases such as cancer. If we, of course, on the way to this do not create a new type of cancer itself.
