Scientists from the University of California at Berkeley, in their own words, invented “muscles for robots.” The technology is based on vanadium dioxide, which is at 67 degrees Celsius, and change its properties of the insulator becomes a conductor. Transformation occurs in 60 milliseconds and it releases energy, which allows the subject to move 50 times more weight than the weight of the “muscle”. Material proved to be quite durable and tests have shown that it is able to withstand at least a million cycles without degradation state transition properties. With such technology, robotics may soon reach an entirely new level.
