Scientists have developed a new kind of harmless radiation therapy for cancer treatment

Soon after opening in 1932 the physicist James Chadwick elementary particle neutron, some scientists immediately saw the potential of the method of radiation therapy, due to the effect of boron neutron capture therapy in the case of cancer . But despite decades of research, the scientific minds have not been able to find a safe and painless way to treat tumors. But according to reports received from the University of Missouri, this method has finally been found.

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is traditionally involves the introduction of a tumor in a non-radioactive isotope of boron-10, which increases its sensitivity to neutron radiation. After that start the tumor is irradiated with thermal protons. In this procedure (boron neutron absorption) nuclear reaction takes place, is formed of boron-11 isotope, which allocates a lethal radiation in the form of alpha particles (helium-4) and lithium ions and which destroy cancer cells. Despite the fact that numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the safety BNTC, objective scientists question was more of a point of search and radiation cancer cells.

Given the fact that cancer cells absorb more material than healthy cells, Professor M. Frederick Hawthorne of MU Curators and his team were able to find a way in which the lithium ions and helium atoms were allocated inside the infected cells and destroy it without harming the surrounding healthy cells.

Hawthorne and his team tested a new form of radiation therapy on mice and the results were successful:

“We attacked the various types of cancer cells with the help of our new technology BNCT»,

– Hawthorne said.

“And the results of the therapy carried out on mice, were delicious. We are ready to move on, trying the technology on larger animals and then in humans. However, before we can apply this technology in the treatment of people, we need the right equipment for this purpose and place. When we finish the construction of the University of Missouri will be the first institution in the world, they will apply this method of radiation therapy. ”
