Find a Question:
Scientists have discovered the secret of the “steel” spine of a new species of shrews
In sub-Saharan Africa live Ugandan white-toothed shrew-bronenoska that of all other mammals features unique structure of the skeleton. It has a very complex spine, which is 4 percent of the total weight of the body and helps the animal to withstand the enormous strain on the body, more than its weight in 1000.
In other words, the animal can bear the weight of an adult. For a long time researchers excited the minds of the question: “Why are the creatures evolved in this way – getting the spine, which can no longer distinguish the animal in the world.” Now a team of scientists from the Natural History Museum Fildovskogo discovered a new species with similar characteristics of the spine, which is a cross between a conventional and Ugandan pygmy shrew-bronenoskoy and sheds light on the unique structure of the spine of the latter.
A new species was named shrew Torah and accurately characterized as complex spine, which is four times stronger than the backbones and other animals. Scientists have found that the new species was first spotted in areas with palm trees.
Researchers believe that shrews use design and durability spine to break through the dried palm leaves in order to profit on the energy-rich larvae that live in the trunks of palm trees.
Unique spine also allows shrews push heavy rocks and logs, which are hidden under the earthworms. Scientists came to the conclusion that it is striving to obtain the highest quality of food triggered their evolution.
In order to catch one of the members of the new species, the scientists took more than a week. According to Scientific American, shrews Torah is very similar to the Ugandan-shrews bronenoskami. To distinguish between them, it is necessary to make an examination of skull and DNA animal.
The results of the study were published in the scientific journal Biology Letters. The team believes that new kinds of help old quickly fill the gap in evolution.
