Find a Question:
Scientists increase chances of IVF success by time-lapse photography
Scientists have developed a method to see which embryos are most viable in IVF treatment. By making time-lapse photos The images are analyzed by a computer which then classifies them on the basis of probability of success.
After fertilization of an egg are in the IVF technique developed embryos “grown” some time in an incubator, after which they are implanted in the future mother. Before the embryos, at that stage, no more than one cluster of cells, are implanted, they are examined for abnormalities, such as the symmetry and the number of cells. However, it is known that actually result not all the embryos implanted into a pregnancy.
The new technique to determine success rate for pregnancy in IVF has been tested by scientists at the University of Pennsylvania in collaboration with five fertility centers. It works with a system that every five minutes a picture of the petri dish where the embryo develops into. Then a computer analyzes the images, in which a pattern can be drawn from the development over time. The computer then indicates whether the probability of success is high or low in the implantation of the embryo.
Of embryonic development is known how the different stages follow each other in time. By taking time-lapse photographs and analyze these can be traced to what extent the embryo’s normal development pattern follows. This offers according to scientists a stronger indication of the success rate in pregnancy than conventional ways to identify abnormalities.
The scientists analyzed IVF treatments performed. At fertility centers It was a blinded study in which the results of the time-lapse analysis were not released at the time of implantation. After the results of the pregnancy through IVF treatments were known, the scientists saw that the implantation of embryos which the computer is a high probability of success indicated led to 54 percent chance of a successful pregnancy. In embryos of which the computer is a low probability of success indicating the number of successful pregnancies was only 34 percent.
According to researchers, the new method is not only increases the chances of a successful pregnancy by IVF, but the technique can also ensure that there are fewer embryos need to be implanted. Since it is known that not all embryos successfully implant in the uterus, is implanted per treatment. Multiple embryos This can also lead to twins or triplets. That risk can be reduced.
