Scientists make contact lens that allows you to zoom in
A group of scientists has designed a rather special contact lens. Normally lenses used to restore sight, but researchers from the Swiss EPFL let you zoom in with their specially developed lens.
According to the scientists at EPFL that the lens developed there can be zoomed up to 2.8 times. Which is relatively low compared to conventional camera lenses, but for a piece of plastic that is applied to the eyes is pretty special. Consideration was also given to the operation: with a nod to the zoom feature can be turned on. The system is able to distinguish between flashing and giving aware of a wink. By giving a wink with the right eye zooms, while the left eye went back to normal vision.
Has been used since 2013 worked on the lens, but there was still much work needed to make it truly portable. Currently, the lens may be worn only half an hour, because the material is not yet fully capable of oxygen to pass through. One of the solutions has been developed by scientists to let through more oxygen is making small channels in the lens of 0.1 mm in diagonal. The contact lens is only 1,55mm thick, but contains a mini telescope that uses mirrors to make objects appear larger than they actually are.
Incidentally, there are research groups working on advanced contact. So Google has a patent pending on a camera lens. Earlier there were scientists a contact lens built with integrated display.
For now, the scientists from the EPFL focus their lens especially those with an eye problem. However, it is obvious that people with healthy eyes here will watch with interest. If and when a commercial release is in sight is not yet clear.Viewing:-130
