Scientists were able to reverse the aging process reversed
Studying the process of aging of living organisms and their management practices – is one of the main directions of modern medical research. It is in this area lie the answers to important questions such as the reduction of morbidity and increase longevity. It seems that scientists have managed one step closer to solving this incredibly complex task.
The joint project of the University of South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney and Harvard Medical School has already proved that reverse the aging process is possible in laboratory mice. Scientists hope to begin clinical trials of its technique on humans in 2014. It seems that the future of medicine is not far off.
Scientists have managed to reverse the process of aging mice by restoring ties between the mitochondria and the cell nucleus. Mitochondria – a kind of battery cells, which is a source of chemical energy needed for the key biological functions. When communication between the mitochondria and the nucleus breaks down cells, the aging process is accelerated.
The research team led by David Sinclair, a professor of UNSW, found that restoring this important intracellular communication, the aging process can not only slow, but also reversed. This technique allows to treat cancer, Type II diabetes, muscle atrophy, inflammatory and mitochondrial diseases, which include chronic fatigue syndrome, liver failure, many syndromes caused by mutations of genes and so on.
This scientific breakthrough was preceded by a previous study of this team, which found that regular exercise and certain diets, such as ingestion of products containing the substance resveratrol (found in red wine and nuts), allow slow decay of intracellular bonds and as a consequence, reduce the rate of aging.

Communication helps restore intracellular coenzyme pronounceable name with complex nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), is present in all living cells. Increasing the concentration of coenzyme inside cells by administration of a specific NAD-producing compounds can achieve significant acceleration of recovery vital links between the nucleus and mitochondria.

After numerous experiments, scientists have learned in one week to rejuvenate laboratory mice aged two years until the age of six months. In other words, thanks to this discovery, any 60-year-old man can be rejuvenated to the state 20 years. The process, of course, not yet perfect, and still not fully understood, but the results that have been achieved by the example of normal mice, already quite impressive.
Scientists also tried to apply the technique in relation to the healthy and young mice. Found that “young” under the influence of NAD became extremely energetic and incredibly active. It may well be that the technique will be applied not only for the old and sick people, but suitable also for those whose lives are closely linked with heavy physical labor.
“The most important thing our discovery was the fact that the element of HIF-1, responsible for the development of many forms of cancer, is also starting to be produced in the body during the aging process – says one of the scientists. – Now we know that the physiology of cancer in some ways similar to the physiology of aging. This explains the fact that one of the biggest risk factors for development of cancer – it is the age. ”
Currently researchers are carefully watching guinea mice that have undergone a process of rejuvenation. It is very important that the technique does not produce any failures and showed no serious side effects. If the mice will be all right, the scientists plan to start human clinical trials in late 2014.
